To buy vintage barware on eBay safely, confirm the maker’s mark in clear photos, ask about chips and the stopper before you pay, check the seller’s feedback on item descriptions, and always pay through eBay checkout. The steps below follow the order of a purchase, from reading the listing to unpacking the box.

Step 1: Read the whole listing, not just the title

Titles are short and full of search terms. The description and photos carry the facts. Look for:

• The maker, and how the seller knows it. “Marked Baccarat” is a different claim from “attributed to Baccarat” or “Baccarat style.”
• Words that signal a copy. “Style,” “look,” “inspired by,” “reproduction” and “replica” describe something other than the named maker. eBay’s counterfeit policy does not allow listings designed to make buyers think an item is genuine or authorized when it is not.
• Condition language. Look for chips, flea bites, cracks, clouding, scratches, repairs and replaced parts. If none are mentioned, ask.
• Measurements. Height, and capacity where given, help you match a piece against a maker’s catalog.

2. Photos of the rim, lip, foot and base in raking light, to show chips.
3. The stopper, both on its own and seated in the neck, so you can see whether it matches and fits.
4. The inside of a decanter against a plain background, to show clouding or residue.
5. For silver, a close-up of every mark. The Birmingham Assay Office notes that marks such as EPNS, EPBM and “Silver Plate” indicate plate, not solid silver.
6. How the item will be packed for shipping.

Then compare the answers with the maker’s own history. Baccarat, for example, says it used paper labels from 1860 to 1936, acid-etched marks from 1936 and laser marking from the early 2000s. A mark that does not fit the claimed age is worth a follow-up question.

Step 3: Check the seller’s feedback

eBay shows a positive feedback percentage beneath the seller’s username. The company explains that a score of 99.5 percent means 99.5 percent of buyers who left feedback had a positive experience.

For vintage pieces, the most useful detail is the item description rating. eBay’s detailed seller ratings let buyers score accuracy of the description, communication, shipping time and shipping charges, each from 1 to 5 stars. Read recent written comments too, looking for mentions of breakage in transit or items not as described.

Step 4: Pay through eBay checkout, and nowhere else

eBay’s Money Back Guarantee applies only when you complete and pay for the purchase on eBay using an eligible payment method, such as a credit or debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo or Klarna. Items paid for partly outside eBay are excluded.

A request to pay by another route, even for a discount, is a reason to walk away.

Step 5: Know what the Money Back Guarantee covers

eBay says the guarantee protects buyers when:

• the item does not arrive;
• the item does not match the listing, including the wrong item or one that arrives broken, damaged or faulty; or
• the seller does not honor its own return policy.

The deadline for items that do not arrive or do not match the listing is 30 calendar days after the actual or estimated delivery date. Contact the seller first. If the problem is not resolved, you can ask eBay to step in from 3 business days after your report, up to 21 business days after it.

Step 6: Unpack and inspect straight away
