Vintage vs New Crystal: Lismore and Harcourt Still in Production

Both patterns are still made, so a vintage piece and a new one can look almost identical. Choose vintage for older lead crystal and period marks, at a price that reflects wear. Choose new for complete matching sets, lead-free Waterford, gifts and pieces with a boutique’s guarantee. The mark on the base is the quickest way to tell them apart.

Some crystal patterns never went out of production. Waterford’s Lismore dates from 1952 and Baccarat’s Harcourt from 1841, and both are sold new today. That creates a question most vintage categories never face: is the piece in the listing old, or recent stock being resold?

This guide compares the two patterns, shows how to separate vintage from current production using only what the makers and published sources say, and sets out when new is the better buy.

Waterford Lismore: seventy years of the same cut

Waterford says Havel created Lismore in 1952, influenced by the 18th-century glass of the firm’s founders, George and William Penrose. Its signature is a band of diamond cuts above a symmetrical series of upward wedge cuts. The company calls it the number-one selling crystal stemware pattern for more than 60 years.

Waterford states that the classic Lismore has remained unchanged. What has changed is the range around it. The company lists variants such as Lismore Black, Lismore Diamond, Lismore Essence and Lismore Red, and has extended the pattern into bowls, barware, vases and more. A piece sold under one of those variant names is not a 1950s design.

How to tell vintage Lismore from new

• The etched mark. The Collector’s Companion reports that the older gothic-script “Waterford” was replaced in 2000 by a stencil-style name over the seahorse logo. The etching can wear away on old pieces, so look at the base under a strong, angled light.
• The sticker. The same source notes that the changing Waterford logo on stickers helps with dating when a sticker survives.
• Weight and sound. Waterford says it has replaced lead oxide with barium oxide and that all its crystal is lead free by the end of 2025. The new crystal is slightly lighter, may show a slight color change and may make a different sound when struck. Weight alone proves nothing, but a very light piece sold as 1970s Lismore deserves questions.
• The name on the listing. “Lismore Essence” or “Lismore Diamond” describes a newer variant, whatever the listing says about age.

Baccarat Harcourt: a pattern from 1841

Baccarat dates Harcourt to 1841 and calls it a true Baccarat icon. Its features are a hexagonal base, six facets and a triple-knob stem. The current Harcourt range includes Harcourt 1841 glasses and a decanter, alongside other shapes.

How to tell vintage Harcourt from new

Baccarat’s own marking history does most of the work. The company says pieces were generally unsigned before 1860 and carried paper labels from 1860 to 1936. Acid etching became standard in 1936, and laser marking has been used since the early 2000s.

That gives three broad groups for Harcourt pieces:

1. Unmarked. Possibly pre-1936 with a lost paper label, possibly a copy. Attribution needs strong evidence.
2. Acid-etched logo. A frosted mark on the base, pointing to production between 1936 and the early 2000s.
3. Laser mark. Recent production.

When is new the better buy?

New pieces of both patterns are available from the makers’ own stores and from authorized retailers, as well as from sellers of new stock on marketplaces. New makes sense in several situations:

• You need a complete, matching set. Vintage sets are often short a glass or two. Buying new gives you identical pieces in the numbers you want.
• You want lead-free crystal. New Waterford is lead free. Health Canada advises limiting lead crystalware to serving, never storing, and using it only from time to time. • You want a guarantee of authenticity. For exceptional pieces, Baccarat recommends buying from its boutiques or authorized retailers and asking for a certificate of authenticity.
• You want easier care. Waterford says its new crystal is more resistant to heat and to the dishwasher, and has been tested to withstand 150 dishwasher cycles, though it still recommends hand washing. Baccarat recommends hand washing for its crystal.
• It is a gift. A boxed new piece from an authorized seller avoids questions about condition and age.

When is vintage the better buy?

Vintage makes sense for different reasons:

• You want the older material. Vintage Waterford is lead crystal; new Waterford is not. If you want the heavier lead crystal, only older Waterford has it.
• You collect by period. A gothic-script Waterford mark or an acid-etched Baccarat logo places a piece in a specific era.
• You are replacing a piece in an old set. Waterford says its new lead-free crystal is lighter and may sound different, so a new glass may not match an older Waterford set.
• You want shapes no longer offered. Discontinued sizes and forms only come up on the secondary market.

The trade-off is condition. Check for chips on rims and feet, dull or scratched areas, and clouding. Waterford’s care guide notes that dishwasher heat, friction and detergent can dull or scratch crystal, and vintage pieces may have years of that behind them.

How is value different for vintage and new?

We do not publish prices for either pattern, because asking prices vary widely and no reliable published price guide was found. The factors differ by market:
